Randy Raine-Reusch is a composer and performer specializing in musical languages lying outside the European cultural context. He has spent many years studying and absorbing both the instrumental techniques and musical philosophies of Asian cultures, while at the same time participating in the most recent music of contemporary culture. He comments ton one difference between Eastern and Western musical thought:
“In the Western tradition, music is often considered to be found in the twelve notes of the scale. But in Asia it’s found between the notes.” (from “Sounding the World: the Technical and Musical Diversity of Randy Raine-Reusch,” by Claire Sykes, in Musicworks 71)
Raine-Reusch specializes in playing a dozen instruments,
including winds and strings, and plays hundreds of other
instruments on a more casual basis. He performs as a solo
artist and in numerous groupings with prominent performers
in concerts of music composed by himself and other
composers. He performs in a number of genres including free
improvisation, experimental music, electroacoustic music,
and world music.
He performs with Asza, a world music ensemble, and in
concerts of music composed by himself and other composers.
He has also played free improvisations with many
distinguished musicians.
