It’s not often in a lifetime that you get to circumnavigate an entire country. And it’s not often that you come across an entire country that’s a small island whose most remarkable work of public infrastructure is a two-lane highway that hugs its coast. Iceland may be best known for ash clouds, Björk, and the world’s most democratic rebound from the 2008 financial collapse, but the Ring Road—or Route No. 1, as it’s known officially—is one of its best-kept secrets. My partner Rachel and I had been dreaming about taking the ultimate road trip for ages, and in October 2012, we made it happen.

Jonathan Bunce (a.k.a. Jonny Dovercourt) has been participating in the independent music community in Toronto – as a musician, writer, editor, presenter, organizer and advocate – since the early 1990s. He has been a member of more than a dozen bands and helped co-found Wavelength, a multi-genre music series. He is currently collaborating in the space-improv-punk guitar duo, Hybrid Moments. Jonny has also served as Artistic Director of The Music Gallery, a long-running Toronto concert space, and as Operations & Development Manager at the Images Festival. He has also co-edited two volumes of Coach House Books’ acclaimed uTOpia anthology.
